MELITAEA AURELIA - NICKERL'S FRITILLARY
MELITAEA BRITOMARTIS - ASSMANN'S FRITILLARY

It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to differentiate Nickerl's Fritillaries from Assmann's Fritillaries without capturing specimens, dissecting them and examining the reproductive organs. Not wishing to do this, I have therefore dedicated this one page to both species.

Nickerl''s Fritillary, Melitaea aurelia - I believe. Val D'Illasi, Veneto, Italy. 09.05.2024.

Near Ogulin, Croatia. 350-400m asl. 05.07.2022. Aurelia or Britomartis?

Forni di Sopra, Friuli, Italy, at about 1000m asl. 27.06.2021. The high altitude points to Nickerl's Fritillary rather than Assmann's Fr, which usually flies at lower levels.

The field near Forni di Sopra, Friuli, Italy, where I saw these butterflies
Forni di Sopra, Friuli, Italy. at about 1000m asl. 27.06.2021.
